As we pass the halfway point of the year, the average prices paid for a scrap car took a hit. Whilst average scrap car prices remained well above €300 in June, they were however the lowest seen in 2023. Dropping by 3% compared to May. A decrease in the value of scrap metal and the value of catalytic converters is the main cause of this reduction in prices.
Although prices are down month on month, they have increased compared to June 2022, by 5%. That’s an additional €16 to the average scrap car price paid.
The average value of a scrap car is influenced by factors such as, the global demand for scrap metals, any reusable parts, plus the make, model, age, weight, condition, and even location of your car.

About the CarTakeBack Scrap Car Price Index
The CarTakeBack Scrap Car Price Index is a rolling monthly index covering the last 13 months. It’s updated monthly using the prices paid for scrap cars at CarTakeBack recycling centres throughout Ireland. We’ve taken into account that cars come in all shapes and sizes, which has an effect on their scrap value, the prices show what the average car would be worth. This means that the index gives a great indication of the movement in the value of scrap cars from one month to another.
The most frequently scrapped car with CarTakeBack in June was again, the Ford Focus – that’s every month this year! In June the average scrap price for a Ford Focus was €314.
There was no changes to the top car scrapped when comparing May and June!
