After reporting a considerable increase to scrap car prices last month, in September we’ve seen a slight downturn. Prices on offer in September were 5% lower than those in August. Although we’ve seen a slight drop, the average prices being paid for scrap cars are still at a good level and are 4% higher than those on offer this time last year. With the ongoing uncertainty around the impact of Coronavirus, we may see further reductions to prices, though all being well we shouldn’t see them plummet as they did in April and May this year.
The scrap value of cars depends on the global demand for scrap metal, as well as the make, model, age, weight, condition, location of your car – these all impact the final value of your vehicle.
About the CarTakeBack Scrap Car Price Index
The CarTakeBack Scrap Car Price Index is a rolling monthly index covering the last 13 months. It’s updated monthly using the prices paid for scrap cars at CarTakeBack recycling centres throughout Ireland. We’ve taken into account that cars come in all shapes and sizes, which has an effect on their scrap value, the prices show what the average car would be worth. This means that the index gives a great indication of the movement in the value of scrap cars from one month to another.
The most common vehicle scrapped in September was the Ford Focus, as it was in August. The average age of the Focuses scrapped was 16 years. Although we’ve seen a drop to the prices being paid for scrap cars, the average price paid for a Ford Focus has increased by 12% to €78 in September, an increase of €8 compared to August.
September has seen a change to the top five makes and models of car being scrapped.
